Job Description
The Chemist I/II is responsible for both directed functions and independent functions as they relate to the physical/chemical testing and process/product development of pharmaceutical and nutritional products and other duties as maybe assigned by Laboratory Management.
General Responsibilities:
- Conduct wide variety of simple and complex chemical or physical tests, following written procedures, in a safe, consistent manner
- Prepare accurate written records of all laboratory activities
- Set up, operate, calibrate, maintain and repair technical equipment and instruments
- Follow the current SOPs for all tasks performed
- Respect the confidentiality of the corporation, customers and personnel
- Independently manage special projects with minimal input from supervisor
- Instruct and assist co-workers with operations and techniques
- Assist in development of testing methods
- Interact with vendors and others outside the organization in consultation with supervisor regarding instrumentation, testing, products and processes
- Prepare oral or written reports or records as required
- Perform other duties as assigned by Laboratory Management
- Experience in the operation/maintenance of Laboratory Instrumentation (such as HPLC, GC, FTIR, UV-Vis, Dissolution, etc.) is strongly desired. The candidate should be able to work independently and demonstrate good judgment in investigating problems, possess strong math skills and effective oral and written communication skills.
Specific Duties and Tasks:
- Conduct chemical or physical quality control tests as per written procedures on components, containers, in process and finished products and stability samples as directed
- Prepare test solutions and batches from written instructions or as directed
- Conduct calibrations, preventive maintenance and repairs on laboratory or other equipment as directed
- Maintain and/or review written records in laboratory notebooks and logs as directed
- Prepare written reports for management as directed
- Attend various training sessions as directed
- Conduct security checks as directed
- Maintain work area in a clean, neat and orderly manner
- Revise or update Standard Operating Procedures and Analytical Procedures documentation in conjunction with Document Control
- Assist in installation and qualification of laboratory equipment as directed
- Assist management in review and release of Quality Records
- Assist in developing or modifying analytical procedures as directed
- Participate in product development, per supervisors instructions, through laboratory, pilot and production scale
- Manage special projects (e.g. purchasing, safety, stability, dissolution) as assigned by laboratory management
Education
- BS in Chemistry or a related science with a strong chemistry background.
- Work experience in a laboratory setting preferred but not required.
